Andrey Ostashov • Series "2020" Bronze, granite. 43?51, h = 127 cm
This work functions in dialogue with another sculpture by Andrey Ostashov, titled Seizure of Territory. The pieces represent a thematic variation by the artist, evident in their shared compositional structure and accessories. They are images charged with a potent energy, blending a warrior’s strength with feminine softness and wisdom. The figure is depicted with bent knees, supported by her feet. A specific symmetry lends harmony to the entire composition: the spread legs, the hands resting on the knees, and the decorative horns on the helmet are all linked in a single symmetrical chain. Dynamism is achieved through the contrast of transitioning volumes—the massive helmet atop a fragile neck, voluminous shoulder guards against a slender waist, and wide-set knees leading to feet brought close together. The foundational element is a turtle on a stone slab, upon which the heroine maintains her balance. In this version, the master modifies the costume, baring the shoulders while covering the hips, thereby establishing a different rhythm between the dark garments and the gold-toned skin. Her body is "clustered" with figures of teddy bears and anthropomorphic dolls, creating a magical and mysterious aura. A vital distinguishing feature of this piece is the heroine’s face. While Seizure of Territory conveys tranquility and an impersonal, mask-like harmony, here we find a living emotion. The girl is focused and slightly tense, her lips pouted with a childlike determination that reflects her intense effort and total immersion in the sacred rite.
